The Ugly Duckling by Shadowography - Drew Colby Sat 28 Nov 2pm

As the four seasons of the year unfold a tiny duckling goes on a journey, only to discover that the journey’s end is…themself!

With the music of Antonio Vivaldi and Max Richter, shadow master Drew Colby explores the classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen using only the shadow of his body, light and a few simple props. A whole magical world unfolds before your very eyes, with a host of unforgettable characters. Ingeniously inspired theatre at it's best....all in the hands....quite literally….of puppeteer Drew Colby, in a universally visual language understood by one and all!

What is this magic of light and dark that so transfixes young and old? It is the ancient art of Hand Shadows (or Shadowgraphy) - the art of creating and animating shadow images using little more than the performer's hands. In Drew Colby's hands the artform is a source of comedy, beauty and wonder.

“A bare stage with a small light projecting onto a large blank screen. The audience of young children and their parents sits in anticipation as a lanky young man in a trilby crosses the stage, smiles and the lights go down. This time, as he crosses in front of the light, his shadow appears behind him.....Here is a performer at the top of his game, who has a fertile imagination and meticulously crafted technique". Pamela Hall, The Croydon Citizen

"I am in awe at how many different animals you conveyed. My son and I were both captivated." Natalie Rope, parent.
